missions tutoring missiontrip

Tutoring works. Missions

We get one of our best returns on investment in our missions tutoring program. Three times a week we transport university students from the center of town to the local public school to help with math, language, science, and reading. The university volunteers receive credit for community hours and the public school students receive much needed attention. Win win!

Most students are struggling with basic concepts like addition or division, language, or science. When we bring tutors from local universities, we’re able to get people who have already studied this material and can re-explain it. What we’ve found is most students only need another voice explaining the same concepts. When we take them out of the classroom environment and give them one on one attention suddenly it’s much easier to understand.

The tutors also gain something. First, they gain an experience that’s not really otherwise available. Many of the university students are not familiar with the neighboring barrios. They know about the poverty that surrounds them, but they have never been in it and certainly never tried to help others. Second, they are able to fulfill a community service credit for their grades. It’s a much needed credit for them to graduate.

We know education is the key to breaking the poverty cycle. Now we have a practical way of loving people. When we say “We help students fully engage their education” this is what we mean.

We’re also able to give them much needed attention. When we invest our time and talents into people they start to realize their own value. When they ask why we’re so invested we can easily state our love for Jesus and how we feel this is what he would be doing.

Want to experience this firsthand on a mission trip? We’d love that too. Just click here and lets start talking.
